The Tale of the Stick
There’s an old saying that “necessity is the mother of invention”, and this could easily apply to Lapel Stick. The original idea for a temporary fabric adhesive began nearly 35 years ago, the first time my wife tried to turn down the “nerdy flip-ups” on my golf shirt.
Over the course of my career I have had the opportunity to work with many incredible companies but the thought that would eventually become Lapel Stick kept resurfacing like a spark that drew me back in. Every time a golf shirt or dress shirt collar wouldn’t stay flat, a male co-worker complained of a fallen hem that he didn’t know how to sew, or trying to politely tell a friend that they seemed to have lost a button. Slowly but surely, the possibility of marketing a temporary fabric adhesive began to take shape.
It was a golfing connection that convinced me to find a way to produce a product in a stick form I could take to the golf course. With the help of someone with a business / financial background similar to mine and the talents of a graphic artist to design the packaging – Lapel Stick was born.
The initial response to the samples we had made was immediate and strong, both men and women connected with the product and were finding new uses for it everyday and showing us new opportunities and market channels that had a need for Lapel Stick. We had created a simple product that addressed hundreds of challenges faced by people every day.
Lapel Stick is rooted in the core values of the company founders, while we are a virtual company working from Victoria BC, across Canada, and the USA we are a strong team made up of incredibly dedicated and talented individuals in sales and marketing, accounting, design, and I.T.
That started out as a little spark that would not be dimmed has grown into a product and company that is on the precipice of being a case study in success. We are now working in multiple industries including Quilting and Sewing, Men’s Fashion, Women’s Fashion, Scrapbooking, Golf and Sports Apparel, and we are developing fundraising programs for schools groups, teams, and organizations in Canada and the USA.
One of the things that make us so passionate about what we are doing is the opportunity it provides us to give back to the community and help people. We have built in a 30 cent automatic donation to the JDRF of Canada from each stick sold. We are also honored to be working with and helping some incredible charities across North America including Every Child Counts, Quilts from Caring Hands, and Quilts of Valor.
As we look to the future, our plans for new industries, continuing our grassroots marketing and brand development, global expansion, and becoming a household name we will maintain our philosophy of giving back and showing by example what it means to be a successful business.
